I had been involved in local newspapers for twenty-two years and I was approached regarding the management buyout of a local newspaper in the central belt. This immediately appealed to me, the proposition appealed to me because this was going to give me the chance to, sort of, affect and manage the day to day running of the business.

We acquired that business, two years later we acquired our second business and a year later we launched a third newspaper. It has proven for me to be the best thing that I have ever done. Yes there are challenges, yes there are pitfalls, there is pain- but that makes the gain so much more worthwhile. I think that people very often have a good business idea, they have ambition but they just don't know how to take it forward. It's very often the fear of the unknown, finance fight, whatever. There just should not be that mystique to it because there are so many people out there who are willing to help you move a business forward.
