Without the UK's vital oil and gas sector it's doubtful whether our economy could be as healthy as it is today. At Bank of Scotland, we've played a significant role in the sector since the development of the North Sea fields in the early 1970s.

Our unparalleled track record of delivering insightful advice and truly bespoke products is made possible by our team of industry-leading oil professionals, bankers and production engineers. Our reserve based lending in the North Sea, for example, has allowed us to assist in the expansion of the UK oil industry through the funding of small to mid-sized independent producers.

It's little surprise, therefore, that we're regarded as the leading provider of financial expertise to the oil and gas sector.

Equity

In response to both client demand and the desire to stretch its risk appetite within the sector, our Oil & Gas team established a new equity investment unit at the beginning of 2007. We can now offer a full suite of funding products ranging from senior debt provision through to pure equity investment and provide fully integrated funding solutions whenever necessary. A first equity investment has already been undertaken by the team with many more to follow. Our equity team will consider potential investment opportunities in the upstream, midstream and downstream segments of the sector but the upstream sector is viewed as the one possessing significant equity "upside" potential.

Support across the value chain

Of course, we would never be happy to simply sit back and enjoy this reputation. That's why, in the last three years, we have substantially grown our team in the mid and downstream sectors of transportation, refining, processing and delivery.

We now work right across the industry's value chain, including the vital downstream sector of refining, petrochemicals, gas transmission pipelines, liquified natural gas, biofuels and metering. We can therefore bring a holistic view to any part of the oil and gas business, quantifying the risks and providing appropriate finance packages.

The team's expertise extends far beyond the UK's shores. In Australia, our team has a similarly broad industry approach, providing groundbreaking funding packages for producers active in the Australasian markets.

Looking to the future

We understand the industry's tremendous staying power in the financial markets and – as global demand is forecast to grow steadily – we also understand the need for significant investment in discovery, recovery, processing and delivery of these fuel sources around the globe.

We realise too the need for the UK oil industry to look to new horizons, both geographically and in new sectors, in order to counter the challenges of diminishing North Sea returns and UK tax regime changes. As it does, the Bank will be there too, helping to secure a successful future for the UK oil and gas sector.
